CARE GUIDE

Fine jewellery built to your spec should last when cared for correctly. Simple habits, storage, gentle cleaning and occasional check-ups keep metal and stones looking their best. Use this guide for your retail floor, client care cards or internal training. If you’re in NYC, you’re welcome to arrange a studio check-up or cleaning for programme samples or customer repairs by appointment.

Storage

Store pieces separately so they don’t scratch each other. Gold, platinum and gemstones can scratch one another when jumbled in a drawer. Soft pouches, lined boxes or a jewellery tray with compartments work well. Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight and humidity when possible, a cool, dry place is ideal. In NYC, bathroom humidity can accelerate tarnishing of silver and affect some stones; storing pieces in a bedroom or closet (in a closed box or pouch) is often better.

Rings & Bracelets

Place rings in individual slots or pouches. Bracelets and bangles are best laid flat or hung so they don’t tangle or knock against other pieces. Avoid stacking multiple bracelets in a single compartment where they can rub and scratch.

Necklaces & Chains

Hang necklaces or lay them flat in a single layer. Clasp necklaces when storing to avoid tangles. Delicate chains can kink if stored under weight; hanging or a flat, divided tray helps.

Earrings

Keep pairs together in a small pouch or an earring holder with pairs of holes. This prevents loss and keeps posts from bending or scratching other pieces.

Cleaning

Gentle, regular cleaning keeps metal and stones looking their best. Always use a soft brush (e.g. a dedicated soft-bristle toothbrush) and avoid abrasives, bleach and harsh chemicals. When in doubt, wipe with a soft, damp cloth and ask us for guidance.

Gold & Platinum

For most gold and platinum pieces with diamonds, a soft toothbrush and a drop of mild soap in lukewarm water is safe. Gently brush the setting and metal, rinse under lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid soaking porous or fragile stones (see below). Rhodium-plated white gold can wear over time; if the plating looks dull or patchy, we can replate it, contact us for a quote.

Silver

Sterling silver can tarnish. A soft cloth and a silver polish formulated for jewellery (not harsh dips) is safe for plain silver. If your piece has gemstones or delicate finishes, wipe with a soft, damp cloth only or bring it in for a professional clean. Avoid exposing silver to sulphur (e.g. rubber bands, some papers) and moisture when storing.

Diamonds

Diamonds are durable and can handle the mild soap-and-brush method above. Avoid knocking them against hard surfaces; although diamond is the hardest natural material, the metal setting can be damaged. Check that prongs are secure periodically.

Coloured Gemstones

Some gemstones are sensitive to heat, chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners. Emeralds are often treated with oils, avoid harsh cleaners and prolonged soaking. Pearls and opals are soft and porous; wipe with a damp cloth only and keep them away from perfume and chemicals. Sapphires and rubies are generally robust and can be cleaned gently like diamonds. When in doubt, use a damp soft cloth only and ask us for care specific to your stone.

When to Book a Professional Check

We recommend a check every year or two for high-wear SKUs, especially production jewellery and daily-wear items. Arrange service if you notice loose stones, worn prongs, a loose clasp, a bent band or any damage. We offer repairs and maintenance and can advise on your master spec and expected wear profile. NYC partners can book a visit to our studio at 37 W 47th St for samples, customer repairs routed through your team, or QC review. Catching a loose prong early prevents stone loss and more costly rework.

Seasonal Tips

Winter (NYC): Cold and dry air can make skin and nails drier; moisturise hands but avoid getting heavy creams under your rings, as buildup can dull stones and require more frequent cleaning. Salt and grit from streets can scratch metal, rinse and gently dry your rings if they’re exposed.

Summer: Sunscreen, chlorine and salt water can affect metal and some stones. Remove jewellery before swimming or applying sunscreen when possible, and rinse with fresh water if it’s exposed to chlorine or salt. Store pieces in a cool place when not worn.

When you travel, keep jewellery in a secure pouch or travel case rather than loose in a bag. A quick check when you return, prongs, clasps, overall condition, helps keep everything in good shape.
